Forbes Deathwatch: Clueless Blog Posts

RL Companies, Stupidity

A story on Massively by Akela Talamasca caught my eye because it had the words “Forbes” and “insult” in the title. After reading this and the article (actually a blog post) that it talks about, I felt that I had to point this out and call a little more attention to it.

I think that I’ve touched on how mainstream media gets their facts wrong, most of the time, here. If not, I might have talked about that in the comments on somebody else’s blog. The thing is, Forbes is part of mainstream media, but David M. Ewalt (his bio), a Deputy Editor for Special Projects at Forbes.com, doesn’t seem to see it that way. I’ve browsed through some of the things he’s written at the site and even though there are some fairly well thought out posts, they are littered with trash. The post just previous to the “Star Trek Re-Enactments” post, for example, tells us about “The A-Team Channel”, celebrating the awesome adventures of Hannibal, Murdoch and B.A. Baracus (his words, not mine). I’m not going to try and compare apples and oranges, but this guy clearly has a problem if he thinks “A-Team = Good / Star Trek = Bad”!!

Of course, I think that Second Life really sucks and there’s plenty of different things about it that suck, but to say that it’s in some “inevitable decline” is simply stupid. Over the past couple days, there have been record concurrent users… probably due to people with newer, faster computers after the holidays. One of the reasons that it sucks is exactly “that”; you need a newer, faster computer to run SL because it will simply hog everything on your computer to the point of not being able to do anything else.

The fact that somebody has an interest in obscure Star Trek cartoon episodes has nothing to do with Second Life being in some sort of decline, though. What all of this “does” mean is that Forbes has already declined to the point of Deputy Editors making baseless, jabbing comments about something that they have a personal opinion about, right on the company web site.

Just as I said in the comment that I left over on Forbes, I’m sure I wouldn’t even allow this sort of crappy post to be made on this web site. If you’re going to try to make a point about something, it’s worth taking the time to actually “make the point”, David. It’s hard for me to believe that this guy has actually won awards for his “coverage” in the tech industry. For coverage like this, they should take some of those awards away.
