They’ll Make You Famous, Then Tell You How Bad They Suck
It’s very entertaining to see what’s posted on the Official SL Blog, today. First, it looks like they’re fishing for some story… any story, about something “good” in Second Life. They claim to have a “staggering” number of requests from media outlets for any kind of information on innovative uses of the platform. At the time of this posting, there have only been 4 trackbacks and exactly zero comments to that entry. Of course, they are asking for people to send their PR agency, Lewis PR, an email with personal information along with a good sized questionnaire.
It feels like more of a “contest” to see who’s story can get published, for some reason. You’d think that Linden Lab would be happy to have “any” good story out of Second Life, at this point. It’ll be interesting to see the results (if any) of this call out to residents. I’m sure that once a lot of them start answering those questions, they might start questioning themselves.
After they tell you that they have a shitload of requests from RL media, requesting your success stories, and tell you that they can bring you fame, they manage to nullify the whole post by bringing out the December Service Quality Metrics. This post, which was published about a half-hour after the other has 13 comments, already… none of them agreeing with the numbers. All of them saying how much SL Sucks. Commenter #2, Drakkar Bahram sums most of the feelings up, rather well by saying:
“FPS improvements? Please. Whatever, it seems there’s been a consistant lag since December, and it’s steadily gotten worse. It’s not my machine, I’ve got a kickass rig. It’s SL. Chat lag, graphics lags, and they say stats are improving? Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. And don’t get me started on the customer service. That’s another topic”
The numbers, themselves are not impressive, at all, with unplanned outages being double what the “planned” outages were. I suppose that actually “is” an improvement over November’s ratio, but the problem is that the actual “usage loss” was a lot higher. Go ahead… tell them your cool innovative uses and how you think SL is the greatest thing since AOL. Keep telling yourself, while you’re at it.

There were not any comments because they disabled them. I don’t know why they did this. This isn’t the first time they threw up a request for residents to throw at the media though.
Ahh… you are correct. I guess I’ve just never seen a post where comments were disabled that still allowed trackbacks. I didn’t even notice that there wasn’t a comment form, there.
